The UK’s energy sector is changing rapidly. As the country works towards a more secure, resilient and lower-carbon energy system, the need for skilled engineering professionals continues to grow.
From nuclear and energy generation through to transmission, distribution and storage, every part of the energy system depends on people who can work safely, solve problems and maintain the systems, assets and infrastructure that keep energy moving.
Our engineering apprenticeships combine technical learning with practical workplace experience, helping employers develop the capability they need while giving apprentices the skills and experience to build rewarding careers across the energy sector.

The UK’s energy sector is evolving, creating growing opportunities for skilled engineering professionals across a diverse range of industries and technologies.
From nuclear and energy generation through to transmission, distribution and storage, engineers play a vital role in keeping critical systems and infrastructure safe, reliable and efficient. Whether maintaining generation plant, supporting high-voltage networks, managing distribution infrastructure or developing new energy storage technologies, skilled engineers are essential to the future of the sector.
Nuclear is a highly specialised engineering environment, combining complex technology with demanding safety, quality and regulatory requirements. Engineering teams support nuclear generation, maintenance, asset integrity, infrastructure, commissioning and decommissioning, creating opportunities for people with strong practical and technical skills.
Energy generation produces the electricity that powers homes, businesses and industry. Engineers support the operation, maintenance and improvement of generation plant and equipment, working across mechanical, electrical and electromechanical systems.
Transmission networks move electricity across the country through high-voltage infrastructure. Engineers work with substations, transformers, switchgear, cables and protection and control systems to maintain safe, reliable and efficient networks.
Distribution networks connect the wider electricity system to customers and organisations. Engineers maintain and improve networks, substations, cables, transformers and other infrastructure, helping to ensure continuity and reliability of supply.
Energy storage is becoming increasingly important as the energy system becomes more flexible. Engineers support battery energy storage systems and other technologies across their lifecycle, from installation and commissioning through to operation, maintenance, testing and asset management.
With engineering opportunities spanning nuclear, generation, transmission, distribution and storage, employers need people with the right skills at every stage of their careers.
Our engineering apprenticeships provide structured routes into the sector, helping people develop practical engineering capability and progress into more advanced technical roles.
Typically 12 months + Apprenticeship Assessment
The Level 2 Engineering Operative apprenticeship provides a practical foundation for people starting their engineering careers, developing the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours needed to work safely and effectively across the energy sector.
The apprenticeship offers two pathways, giving employers flexibility to develop apprentices in line with their role and workplace environment.
Develop practical engineering skills to support the safe and efficient operation of equipment, systems and processes across the energy sector. Build confidence in carrying out operational activities, inspection, testing and routine maintenance while working safely and effectively.
Develop practical engineering skills to support the safe and efficient maintenance of engineering infrastructure and assets across the energy sector. Build confidence in inspection, testing, maintenance and improvement activities while working safely and effectively.
Typically 42 months + Apprenticeship Assessment
The Level 3 Engineering Technician apprenticeship develops advanced technical knowledge, practical engineering skills and professional behaviours for technicians across the energy sector.
The programme can be aligned to nuclear, generation, transmission, distribution and storage, developing capability across engineering systems, inspection and testing, diagnostics, maintenance, installation, commissioning and asset management.
Together, the Level 2 and Level 3 programmes provide structured routes into energy engineering and progression into advanced technical roles.
Developing engineers who understand safe working practices, engineering procedures, quality and compliance, including the demands of safety-critical environments.
Building the skills needed to maintain equipment, infrastructure and systems and support reliable energy operations.
Developing practical and technical engineering skills that can be applied to the equipment, systems and assets used across the energy sector.
Creating structured development routes for new entrants and existing employees while building capability for the future.
Supporting progression into technical roles aligned to the requirements of different energy environments.
Helping organisations develop the next generation of skilled engineering professionals and retain valuable technical capability.
Our delivery approach includes:
Self-study and micro-learning
Practical learning
1-to-1 progress reviews every 8–12 weeks
Employer support
Workplace application
Gateway preparation
End-Point Assessment preparation and support
This approach helps apprentices build confidence and competence while allowing employers to develop skills that are directly relevant to their workforce and operational requirements.
From nuclear and generation through to transmission, distribution and storage, our apprenticeship programmes provide structured routes to build practical engineering capability, gain valuable workplace experience and progress into advanced technical roles.
For employers, they provide a practical way to develop talent, strengthen technical capability and build a skilled workforce equipped to support the changing energy sector. By investing in apprenticeships, organisations can develop the engineering capability they need today while building the workforce of tomorrow.
